Clare and Anderson wouldn't be affected by Australia -- as expats, they're immune. I've put in a bit about that though because it's easy to forget.
To be honest, the reason I didn't put discussion of what happens in Australia into the story any earlier is that it was getting lengthy and dragging a bit as it was. I could move it, but logic aside I honestly think emotionally it works better here.
