It's definitely well worth it. I can ask my teacher about good places to take it or organizations to take it with in the Midwest, if you like. I had the rather interesting experience of being at a liberal hippie school and then there was a class about guns for people who are scared of them. Two years later I'm all right with a shotgun and a handgun, I could compete if I practiced more, and if I bothered to go take the test I could have a concealed carry license in at least three states. But I haven't because I can't breathe a word about shooting to my mother because of the anti-gun household thing.
It's quite fun shooting things (trap shooting, which is basically shooting ceramic frisbees with shotguns is one of my favorites). If you have good hand-eye coordination and patience for practice, you wouldn't have a problem. -shrugs- Plus, then you know stuff for when you're writing things like this!
Though if you decide to take classes (well worth it, also I've found that aside from crazy survivalists most gun people are ridiculously nice) I warn you, movies and TV shows will start making you twitch ALL OVER with how badly they're handled. Sometimes I have to mutter, "it's just a prop it's just a prop" over and over again when watching, say, Supernatural.
Also here's a really good website targeted (hah) towards lady gun-owners, but also really good for beginners. http://www.corneredcat.com/
