I love research! It was a lot of fun studying what I had to study -- unsettling at times, but never uninteresting.
I've been fascinated with Maori facial tattoos since I saw this image (http://lh3.ggpht.com/-FEky7WorDv4/S7KwX1Q9AsI/AAAAAAAAAus/wSEniXSa1Gw/IMG_1381.JPG) in a textbook in high school. I imagine being from NZ you've seen it before, but in case not, the context is thus -- the "realistic" drawing at top is a 19th century portrait of Tupai Kupa, a Maori Chief, done by a European, and the drawing below that is a self-portrait he himself drew. It blows me away every time I see it.
