Oh, this is beautiful. The pacing is fabulous, the characterizations compelling. I love Clare's about-face when she realizes Jack has found a passion: she clearly is a caring and flexible person as well as being intelligent and independent (and a badass). It's really nice to see a character display that kind of depth.
I love Graveworthy discarding his "terrible metaphor". Fantastic. Continuity question: how did Jack wash himself when he'd just dumped all the water onto himself? What did he lather or rinse with? Is there indoor plumbing? If so, why the ewer?
