Seconding (or thirding/fourthing/etc.) the "it's clearer this time" comment. I do still think it's a little "ack! so many people!" but I often feel like that at the beginning of books, so I think you're good.
Sparks seems a lot like Jack to me, more so now than before. It's not a bad thing.
