The only thing that struck me was that I think it would be better to find an alternative to suborning: it's not always a good thing to make your reader have to reach for their dictionary.
Also, I'm loving what you've done with this to change it to an original novel. It's fascinating and the magical aspects are easy to follow even as they make you curious to know more.
