I think the idea that Colin would visibly react like that is inauthentic not just for someone who has prison experience but any long-time criminal (that isn't a kid or a wet brain) talking to a cop. Maybe a measured verbal comeback but nothing that would imply that the other person had affected his self-control.
I think anyone who works in the criminal justice system would probably use the technically correct "not guilty", especially since the "found" more specifically implies a legal determination, as opposed to a more general statement using the word "innocent".
Honestly I think the first chapter mostly works, there were just a couple of words I found jarring (especially "lover"). But I also realize that I may be a bit like a gun person watching an action movie, or in other words I should just get over myself (I grew up with gun people so I'm allowed to make that crack).
