Ha, that's so cool that you had imagined a Maori tattoo when you were writing this - I'm from New Zealand, and totally pictured a moko from your description, but thought it was probably just me. The power of such a tattoo - in terms of its meaning and the mana (status) it brings - would totally add to Colin's cred in prison, too.
All the research that has gone into this novel is pretty epic.
