I want to say how happy I am that Conan Doyle is still in the story -- I think you made a comment ages ago about taking out extra characters and he was one of the ones you mentioned (I believe, anyway. I distinctly remember being sad about it, and expecting him to NOT be here in the rewrite).

This footnote comes at the end of the paragraph instead of at the end of the section. I expected it at the end of the section, but I suppose it will depend on how it looks when you type set it, where you would want it to be at the bottom of the page, I suppose? I did find it, it was only a little confusing.
"Ready?" he asked, as the balloon left the ground. "Close the gas!"
Shouldn't this be the ship leaving the ground, not the balloon? I will admit, I had some difficulty picturing how the balloon behaved when not completely full. It seemed like excess fabric might be hanging down or something, but I wasn't sure.
