Great chapter! This world's analog to Hiroshima and Nagasaki had a longer-lasting effect than ours, but it sounds like the lesson may be losing its impact by the time you're describing. The actual takeoff was less dramatic than I'd expected, especially after Mrs. Christian's rather pretentious oath-giving, but the understated tone really rang true.
Will there be illustrations? You describe everything so clearly I can picture most of the details, but I'm not very good at visualizing the whole structure put together. And maps maybe? I like maps.
