Well, Mrs. Christian says "You depart tomorrow evening" -- they really have to depart under darkness, which helps them keep stealthy until they hit open water. I can play that up though.
The stormpirates introduction is mostly the same, I believe; not materially changed, at any rate.
Re flying, some other people have asked that too -- I kind of assumed they were able to rise and lower as needed, and letting themselves fly low would conserve helium. It seems a weird thing for people to be obsessing over but many did. I need to have a look at it.
So this was an Egypt that wasn’t overrun in the great Arab Conquest of the handwavey 8th-9th centuries then?
Well, it's still their ancestors at least in part, and it makes for a better story :D I mean it's not like the Arab Conquest completely eradicated the Egyptians.
The "destroy whoever's hurting you" was a bit on purpose -- it's Jack's version of over-reaction, that you have to totally eradicate someone hurting you so they can't do it again (I stole this concept, admittedly, from Jane Eyre :D). It's intentionally a bit naive, because Jack's espousing a pretty naive philosophy there. I'll have a look at it, but you lose the "so they can't do it again" if it's threatening instead of hurting. Hmmm.
I think people who work a lot in stories or with storytelling do have a bit of a callus when it comes to "moving" stories -- we know how things function from the inside so we tend to feel less emotional impact because we can see the man behind the curtain. At least for me, it means that when I do get a strong impact, it's REALLY strong.
