I hadn't really thought about the lack of the Clare-Purva relationship, but you're not wrong. For a while in the very first original draft I had them not liking each other much, but there was no particular point to that and eventually I jettisoned the idea. Could be this lack of interaction is a relic of that.
I'll have to look at what I can do in a larger sense to associate the two of them -- I don't know that a shopping scene would fit well, but with a consciousness I need to do more I can go through the whole book and be a bit subtle about it.
