He'd never considered the possibility that he might be left to be executed. He didn't now, either, though he wasn't sure at this point how he was going to be saved.
This part doesn't seem quite right to me: by reflecting on the idea of abandonment, he IS considering the possibility that he could be left to be executed. He's just also rejecting it out of hand as not something that would ever happen.
